What Is a BMAC Injection?

Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) is a regenerative orthopedic therapy used in BMAC injection Wellington Florida clinics that uses your own bone marrow — rich in mesenchymal stem cells, growth factors, and healing proteins — to support tissue repair and reduce pain in joints, tendons, ligaments, and bones.

Unlike traditional injections (such as steroids), BMAC supplies a concentrated source of your body’s natural regenerative cells, supporting healing rather than merely masking symptoms.

How BMAC Therapy Works

1

Bone Marrow Harvesting

Healthy bone marrow is gently aspirated — typically from the pelvic bone — under local anesthesia.

2

Processing & Concentration

The marrow is processed in-office to concentrate the regenerative cells.

3

Precise Injection

Using advanced imaging guidance (ultrasound/fluoroscopy), the BMAC is injected into the injured joint or tissue, promoting natural healing and inflammation reduction.

This outpatient procedure usually takes a couple of hours and lets most patients return home the same day.

Conditions Treated with BMAC Injections

BMAC is often recommended for patients who want an alternative to surgery or who have not responded well to conventional treatments. Common indications include:

BMAC can also help reduce inflammation, improve joint function, and support long-term tissue regeneration.

I saw Dr Al-Rashid for a painful hip in 2023. I was at a point where I had to use my hands to “lift” my leg into the car because the pain was too intense to just lift it on its own. He said that I was a candidate for PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections because I still have cartilage. Although they are not (yet) covered by insurance, it was an investment in my comfort that I am very happy with. It has been over a year, I have no pain whatsoever and can carry out my normal routine, and increased my exercise. I highly recommend Dr Al-Rashid and the Atlantis Orthopedic Group in Palm Beach Gardens.

Always outstanding! He did my wife’s hip a little over a year ago and the follow up was great. I need two knee replacements and went to him to look at them. I will start with the first one end of this month. The staff follow through as been excellent. The best news is he does surgery at Palms West Hospital.

I had my right hip replaced by Dr. Rashid and he was excellent. The operation went smoothly. I didn't even feel the prosthetic when I woke up from surgery.

Before all of this he was very careful and helpful, explaining everything in detail from beginning to end, even tried a few treatments before jumping into an operation.

(injections/pills/scans etc)

He explained the pros and con very well. His staff is excellent in the Loxahatchee and Lake Worth office. I'm very happy I found him. My leg feels superior than my normal leg and it's only been three weeks. The incision was tiny, and after seeing him three weeks after the operation (today), the prosthetic is perfectly in place. I barely have any pain other than wound aches from the muscle incision, which of course is healing every single day.

I no longer feel any electrical surges on my leg, spasms, or the leg not waking up when I'm in a sitting position or sleeping. Literally feels perfect. I have nothing negative to say, would definitely recommend him to everybody. I like the fact that he was very detailed with everything from beginning to end.

He takes his job very seriously well being relatable and is not the type of doctor that jumps into an instant operation, unless absolutely needed, which is positive.

Frequently Asked Questions

What conditions can BMAC injections treat?

BMAC injections are commonly used to treat knee, hip, shoulder, and ankle osteoarthritis, cartilage damage, tendon injuries, ligament tears, and chronic joint pain. Many patients seek BMAC therapy when conservative treatments have failed or to delay or avoid surgery.

Are BMAC injections safe?

Yes. BMAC injections are generally considered safe because they use your own biological material, which reduces the risk of allergic reaction or rejection. The procedure is performed by a board-certified orthopedic specialist using image guidance for accuracy and safety.

How is a BMAC injection performed?

The procedure involves collecting a small amount of bone marrow—typically from the pelvic bone—processing it to concentrate regenerative cells, and injecting it precisely into the injured area. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and usually takes a few hours from start to finish.

Is BMAC better than PRP injections?

BMAC contains a higher concentration of regenerative cells compared to PRP, which mainly contains platelets and growth factors. BMAC may be recommended for more advanced joint degeneration or cartilage damage, while PRP is often used for milder injuries.

How long does recovery take after a BMAC injection?

Most patients return home the same day. Light activities are usually allowed within a few days, while strenuous activity may be limited for several weeks depending on the treatment area and provider recommendations.
