What Is Stem Cell Therapy for Knee Pain?

Stem cell therapy for knee pain in Wellington, Florida is a regenerative treatment that uses your body’s own healing cells, typically harvested from bone marrow or adipose (fat) tissue. At Palm Beach Regenerative Orthopedics, our adipose-derived stem cell treatments are designed to target knee joint degeneration caused by osteoarthritis and everyday wear and tear, helping reduce inflammation, support tissue repair, and improve long-term joint comfort.

Unlike steroid injections or pain medications that only mask symptoms, stem cells may work deeper — promoting biological repair mechanisms inside the knee joint.

How Stem Cell Therapy Works

1

Comprehensive Orthopedic Evaluation

Experienced orthopedic specialists evaluate your knee with imaging and physical exam to design a tailored treatment plan.

2

Cell Collection & Processing

Stem cells are typically drawn from your own bone marrow or fat tissue, then concentrated into a regenerative biologic solution.

3

Precision Injection

Under sterile conditions and often ultrasound guidance, concentrated cells are delivered into the knee where healing is needed most.

4

Recovery & Monitoring

Most patients resume light activities soon after treatment and experience improvement over several weeks to months as the regenerative process unfolds.

This personalized approach is safe when performed by trained, board-certified orthopedic professionals using evidence-based protocols.

Benefits for Knee Pain & Osteoarthritis

While scientific evidence is still evolving, multiple studies show that stem cell therapy may:

A recent review finds that stem cell injections may improve pain and function compared with placebo in knee osteoarthritis patients, though evidence certainty is still low.

I saw Dr Al-Rashid for a painful hip in 2023. I was at a point where I had to use my hands to “lift” my leg into the car because the pain was too intense to just lift it on its own. He said that I was a candidate for PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections because I still have cartilage. Although they are not (yet) covered by insurance, it was an investment in my comfort that I am very happy with. It has been over a year, I have no pain whatsoever and can carry out my normal routine, and increased my exercise. I highly recommend Dr Al-Rashid and the Atlantis Orthopedic Group in Palm Beach Gardens.

Always outstanding! He did my wife’s hip a little over a year ago and the follow up was great. I need two knee replacements and went to him to look at them. I will start with the first one end of this month. The staff follow through as been excellent. The best news is he does surgery at Palms West Hospital.

I had my right hip replaced by Dr. Rashid and he was excellent. The operation went smoothly. I didn't even feel the prosthetic when I woke up from surgery.

Before all of this he was very careful and helpful, explaining everything in detail from beginning to end, even tried a few treatments before jumping into an operation.

(injections/pills/scans etc)

He explained the pros and con very well. His staff is excellent in the Loxahatchee and Lake Worth office. I'm very happy I found him. My leg feels superior than my normal leg and it's only been three weeks. The incision was tiny, and after seeing him three weeks after the operation (today), the prosthetic is perfectly in place. I barely have any pain other than wound aches from the muscle incision, which of course is healing every single day.

I no longer feel any electrical surges on my leg, spasms, or the leg not waking up when I'm in a sitting position or sleeping. Literally feels perfect. I have nothing negative to say, would definitely recommend him to everybody. I like the fact that he was very detailed with everything from beginning to end.

He takes his job very seriously well being relatable and is not the type of doctor that jumps into an instant operation, unless absolutely needed, which is positive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is stem cell therapy effective for knee osteoarthritis?

Stem cell therapy may help relieve pain and improve mobility in patients with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis. Clinical evidence suggests potential benefits in pain reduction and function, though results vary by individual. Our Wellington-area orthopedic specialists carefully evaluate each patient to determine if regenerative treatment is appropriate.

Is stem cell therapy safe?

When performed by trained orthopedic specialists using a patient’s own cells, stem cell therapy is considered to have a low risk profile. Temporary soreness or swelling may occur. Palm Beach Regenerative Orthopedics follows strict medical protocols to ensure patient safety and treatment accuracy.

How is stem cell therapy different from PRP injections?

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) uses concentrated platelets to stimulate healing, while stem cell therapy introduces cells with broader regenerative potential. Stem cell therapy may be recommended for more advanced joint degeneration, while PRP is often used for milder conditions. Your provider will recommend the best option for your knee pain.

Can stem cell therapy help avoid knee replacement surgery?

For some patients, stem cell therapy may help delay or reduce the need for knee replacement surgery, especially in early or moderate arthritis. However, it does not replace surgery for advanced joint damage. Our orthopedic team will discuss realistic expectations during your evaluation.

Is stem cell therapy FDA approved?

Stem cell therapy is considered investigational and not FDA-approved as a standard treatment for knee arthritis. However, it is legally offered under physician-directed regenerative medicine protocols. We prioritize patient education, transparency, and evidence-based care.
