Stem Cell Therapy for Knee Pain in Palm Beach, Florida

stem cell therapy for knee pain injury

Knee pain is one of the most common reasons patients visit my office in Palm Beach. Many are active adults dealing with Knee osteoarthritis, prior sports injuries, or gradual Cartilage degeneration. Others are trying to delay or avoid joint replacement.

Over the past decade, I have incorporated biologic treatments — including Stem cell therapy — regenerative cellular treatment, Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and other autologous options — into carefully selected treatment plans. This page explains what these treatments involve, who may benefit, and where uncertainties remain.

What Is Stem Cell Therapy for Knee Pain?

In orthopedic practice, “stem cell therapy” typically refers to the use of a patient’s own biologic tissue, processed and reinjected, to support the joint’s healing environment.

Most commonly, this includes:

These treatments fall under the broader category of Non-surgical knee pain treatment, conservative biologic therapy and Regenerative joint therapy biologic cartilage support.

Importantly, these are forms of Autologous biologics patient-derived cellular material, meaning the tissue comes from your own body.

How the Procedure Is Performed

In my Palm Beach clinic, precision and sterility are non-negotiable.

Step 1: Harvest

Depending on the clinical situation:

These are performed under sterile conditions using local anesthesia.

Step 2: Processing

We use a Centrifuge processing system — biologic concentration equipment to isolate and concentrate cellular components. Examples in the broader field include:

All processing follows strict Sterile processing protocols — contamination prevention standards.

Step 3: Injection

Cells are delivered using:

These are performed under sterile conditions using local anesthesia.

The Biology: What Are We Injecting?

Most orthopedic biologic procedures rely on:

Under current FDA regulations on biologics — federal cellular oversight, these treatments must use Minimally manipulated cells — regulatory classification term and meet Autologous stem cell compliance — same-day processing standards.

These are not lab-expanded embryonic stem cells. They are same-day, patient-derived biologic concentrates.

I saw Dr Al-Rashid for a painful hip in 2023. I was at a point where I had to use my hands to “lift” my leg into the car because the pain was too intense to just lift it on its own. He said that I was a candidate for PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections because I still have cartilage. Although they are not (yet) covered by insurance, it was an investment in my comfort that I am very happy with. It has been over a year, I have no pain whatsoever and can carry out my normal routine, and increased my exercise. I highly recommend Dr Al-Rashid and the Atlantis Orthopedic Group in Palm Beach Gardens.

Always outstanding! He did my wife’s hip a little over a year ago and the follow up was great. I need two knee replacements and went to him to look at them. I will start with the first one end of this month. The staff follow through as been excellent. The best news is he does surgery at Palms West Hospital.

I had my right hip replaced by Dr. Rashid and he was excellent. The operation went smoothly. I didn't even feel the prosthetic when I woke up from surgery.

Before all of this he was very careful and helpful, explaining everything in detail from beginning to end, even tried a few treatments before jumping into an operation.

(injections/pills/scans etc)

He explained the pros and con very well. His staff is excellent in the Loxahatchee and Lake Worth office. I'm very happy I found him. My leg feels superior than my normal leg and it's only been three weeks. The incision was tiny, and after seeing him three weeks after the operation (today), the prosthetic is perfectly in place. I barely have any pain other than wound aches from the muscle incision, which of course is healing every single day.

I no longer feel any electrical surges on my leg, spasms, or the leg not waking up when I'm in a sitting position or sleeping. Literally feels perfect. I have nothing negative to say, would definitely recommend him to everybody. I like the fact that he was very detailed with everything from beginning to end.

He takes his job very seriously well being relatable and is not the type of doctor that jumps into an instant operation, unless absolutely needed, which is positive.

How Does It Compare to Other Treatments?

Physical Therapy & Medications

Often first-line and appropriate for many patients.

Corticosteroid Injections

Provide short-term relief but may accelerate cartilage thinning with repeated use.

Hyaluronic Acid

May improve lubrication; results vary.

PRP Injection Therapy

Evidence supports benefit in mild-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis.

PRP Injection Therapy

Evidence supports benefit in mild-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis.

Knee Replacement Surgery

Most reliable option for advanced arthritis with structural collapse.

May provide longer-term symptom improvement in selected patients, though data is still evolving.

Risks and Limitations

No procedure is risk-free.

Potential risks include:

Because these treatments fall under evolving regulatory and scientific frameworks, long-term comparative data is still developing.

We always conduct thorough Informed consent for biologics, procedural risk disclosure discussions before proceeding.

What Do Studies Show?

Current literature suggests:

Biologic therapy does not reliably regenerate advanced cartilage loss. The primary goal is symptom improvement and functional support.

Regulatory and Ethical Standards

In my Palm Beach Regenerative Orthopedics practice:

Patients should be cautious of national marketing networks such as Regenexx or heavily branded programs that may emphasize marketing over individualized medical evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is stem cell therapy FDA-approved?

Autologous same-day biologics are regulated under existing frameworks but are not FDA “approved” in the same way as pharmaceuticals. Expanded or cultured stem cells are not permitted outside clinical trials.

Some patients experience relief lasting 6–24 months. Others may not respond. There are no guarantees.

Harvest and injection are performed under local anesthesia. Temporary soreness is common.

Current evidence does not support predictable regrowth of advanced cartilage loss.

Yes. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) primarily delivers growth factors, while BMAC or adipose concentrates include mesenchymal stem cells and other cellular components.

If you have severe deformity, instability, or debilitating bone-on-bone arthritis unresponsive to conservative care, joint replacement may offer more reliable improvement.
