What Are Adipose‑Derived Stem Cells (ADSCs)?

Adipose‑derived stem cells (also known as adipose‑derived mesenchymal stem cells) are potent, multipotent cells found in fatty tissue that can differentiate into multiple tissue types — including bone, cartilage and ligament cells. These cells are similar to other mesenchymal stem cells but are particularly abundant and easy to obtain with minimally invasive techniques.

Because adipose tissue is plentiful and accessible, extracting stem cells from fat can yield a high number of regenerative cells with strong potential to support healing.

How ADSCs Work in Regenerative Orthopedics

ADSCs help repair injured tissue through several mechanisms:

1

Differentiation

ADSCs can transform into specialized cells such as cartilage, bone, and tendon cells to support tissue regeneration.

2

Paracrine Signaling

They secrete growth factors and cytokines that attract reparative cells to injury sites and stimulate healing processes.

3

Immunomodulation

ADSCs modulate inflammation — one of the key drivers of chronic pain and tissue degeneration — helping reduce pain and facilitate recovery.

Applications of Adipose‑Derived Stem Cell Therapy

At Palm Beach Regenerative Orthopedics, we utilize adipose derived stem cell therapy in Wellington, Florida to treat a wide range of orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions, including:

This therapy is especially valuable for patients seeking alternatives to joint replacement or those who have chronic pain unresponsive to conventional treatments.

I saw Dr Al-Rashid for a painful hip in 2023. I was at a point where I had to use my hands to “lift” my leg into the car because the pain was too intense to just lift it on its own. He said that I was a candidate for PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections because I still have cartilage. Although they are not (yet) covered by insurance, it was an investment in my comfort that I am very happy with. It has been over a year, I have no pain whatsoever and can carry out my normal routine, and increased my exercise. I highly recommend Dr Al-Rashid and the Atlantis Orthopedic Group in Palm Beach Gardens.

Always outstanding! He did my wife’s hip a little over a year ago and the follow up was great. I need two knee replacements and went to him to look at them. I will start with the first one end of this month. The staff follow through as been excellent. The best news is he does surgery at Palms West Hospital.

I had my right hip replaced by Dr. Rashid and he was excellent. The operation went smoothly. I didn't even feel the prosthetic when I woke up from surgery.

Before all of this he was very careful and helpful, explaining everything in detail from beginning to end, even tried a few treatments before jumping into an operation.

(injections/pills/scans etc)

He explained the pros and con very well. His staff is excellent in the Loxahatchee and Lake Worth office. I'm very happy I found him. My leg feels superior than my normal leg and it's only been three weeks. The incision was tiny, and after seeing him three weeks after the operation (today), the prosthetic is perfectly in place. I barely have any pain other than wound aches from the muscle incision, which of course is healing every single day.

I no longer feel any electrical surges on my leg, spasms, or the leg not waking up when I'm in a sitting position or sleeping. Literally feels perfect. I have nothing negative to say, would definitely recommend him to everybody. I like the fact that he was very detailed with everything from beginning to end.

He takes his job very seriously well being relatable and is not the type of doctor that jumps into an instant operation, unless absolutely needed, which is positive.

Why Choose Fat‑Derived Stem Cell Treatments?

Higher Cell Yield

Fat tissue offers a higher stem cell concentration compared to bone marrow, providing more cells to support healing without repeat procedures.

Minimally Invasive

ADSC therapy uses a simple outpatient fat harvest, typically from the abdomen or thigh, under local anesthesia — with quick recovery.

Autologous & Safe

Using your own cells eliminates the risk of immune rejection or disease transmission — a hallmark of safety in regenerative medicine.

Evidence‑Based Research

Ongoing research continues to demonstrate the potential of ADSCs in musculoskeletal repair and tissue engineering. While outcomes vary based on condition and patient health, many studies show improved pain scores and function following treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do adipose stem cells work for joint pain?

ADSCs reduce inflammation, promote tissue regeneration, and secrete growth factors that stimulate healing. They are especially effective for osteoarthritis, tendon injuries, and soft tissue damage.

Is adipose-derived stem cell therapy safe?

Yes. Since the stem cells are autologous (from your own body), the risk of rejection or disease transmission is extremely low. The procedure is minimally invasive and performed under local anesthesia.

How are stem cells collected from fat tissue?

A small amount of fat is gently harvested via a minimally invasive liposuction technique, usually from the abdomen or thigh. The fat is then processed to isolate regenerative stem cells for injection into the injured area.

How long does it take to see results from ADSC therapy?

Results vary by patient and condition. Many patients notice improvement in pain and mobility within 4–12 weeks, with continued improvement over several months as tissues regenerate.

How long does the procedure take?

The ADSC procedure is an outpatient treatment, typically completed in 1–2 hours, including fat harvest, cell processing, and injection. Most patients return home the same day.
