Stem Cell Therapy for Back Pain in Sebring, Florida

Chronic lower back pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal problems I see in my orthopedic practice serving patients in Sebring, Florida. Many individuals struggle with pain from degenerative disc disease, disc injuries, or spinal degeneration that interferes with work, sleep, and everyday movement. For some patients, medications and physical therapy provide only partial relief.

At Palm Beach Regenerative Orthopedics clinic, we offer stem cell therapy for back pain as a non-surgical treatment option for selected patients. This treatment uses a patient’s own regenerative cells to support healing in damaged spinal structures such as intervertebral discs, joints, and surrounding tissues.

Back Pain Conditions We Commonly Treat

Persistent back pain may arise from several spinal structures. Patients in the Sebring and Highlands County area often seek care for:

These conditions affect the intervertebral disc, which acts as a cushion between vertebrae. Over time, discs may lose hydration and structural integrity, leading to inflammation and nerve irritation.

In some cases, conventional treatments such as physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, epidural steroid injections, or spinal fusion surgery may be considered.

Stem Cell Therapy in Regenerative Spine Care

Stem cell therapy used in orthopedic medicine typically involves mesenchymal stem cells, which are regenerative cells capable of supporting tissue repair and reducing inflammation.

These cells may be obtained from:

In some patients, the cells are injected directly into the affected spinal structure, including the intervertebral disc, in a procedure sometimes referred to as an intradiscal stem cell injection.

This approach is being studied in clinical research, including publications in journals such as the International Journal of Spine Surgery, which have evaluated regenerative therapies for chronic discogenic back pain.

It is important to note that research is still evolving, and results can vary between individuals.

Who May Be a Candidate for Stem Cell Therapy

Patients from Sebring and surrounding Central Florida communities may be considered for regenerative spine therapy if they have:

Evaluation typically includes:

Careful screening is essential to determine whether regenerative therapy is appropriate.

When Stem Cell Therapy May Not Be Appropriate

Stem cell therapy is not recommended for every patient with back pain. Individuals who may not be suitable candidates include:

  • Severe spinal instability

  • Advanced spinal stenosis with nerve compression

  • Large disc herniations requiring surgical decompression

  • Spinal fractures

  • Active infection

  • Certain cancers involving the spine

In these cases, other treatments such as microdiscectomy or spinal fusion surgery may provide more predictable relief.

Safety Considerations, Risks, and Limitations

Like any medical procedure, stem cell therapy carries potential risks.

Possible complications include:

  • Infection

  • Bleeding

  • Temporary increase in pain

  • Nerve irritation

  • Lack of improvement

Another important limitation is that regenerative spine treatments remain an evolving field of medicine. While early clinical research and patient experiences are promising, long-term outcomes continue to be studied.

I saw Dr Al-Rashid for a painful hip in 2023. I was at a point where I had to use my hands to “lift” my leg into the car because the pain was too intense to just lift it on its own. He said that I was a candidate for PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections because I still have cartilage. Although they are not (yet) covered by insurance, it was an investment in my comfort that I am very happy with. It has been over a year, I have no pain whatsoever and can carry out my normal routine, and increased my exercise. I highly recommend Dr Al-Rashid and the Atlantis Orthopedic Group in Palm Beach Gardens.

Always outstanding! He did my wife’s hip a little over a year ago and the follow up was great. I need two knee replacements and went to him to look at them. I will start with the first one end of this month. The staff follow through as been excellent. The best news is he does surgery at Palms West Hospital.

I had my right hip replaced by Dr. Rashid and he was excellent. The operation went smoothly. I didn't even feel the prosthetic when I woke up from surgery.

Before all of this he was very careful and helpful, explaining everything in detail from beginning to end, even tried a few treatments before jumping into an operation.

(injections/pills/scans etc)

He explained the pros and con very well. His staff is excellent in the Loxahatchee and Lake Worth office. I'm very happy I found him. My leg feels superior than my normal leg and it's only been three weeks. The incision was tiny, and after seeing him three weeks after the operation (today), the prosthetic is perfectly in place. I barely have any pain other than wound aches from the muscle incision, which of course is healing every single day.

I no longer feel any electrical surges on my leg, spasms, or the leg not waking up when I'm in a sitting position or sleeping. Literally feels perfect. I have nothing negative to say, would definitely recommend him to everybody. I like the fact that he was very detailed with everything from beginning to end.

He takes his job very seriously well being relatable and is not the type of doctor that jumps into an instant operation, unless absolutely needed, which is positive.

Physical Therapy

Often the first line of treatment. Strengthening the core and spinal stabilizing muscles may reduce pain and prevent progression.

Medications

Anti-inflammatory medications and muscle relaxants may provide temporary relief but do not repair damaged disc tissue.

Epidural Steroid Injections

Steroid injections can reduce inflammation around irritated spinal nerves but typically provide short-term relief rather than structural repair.

Radiofrequency Ablation

Used for facet joint pain by disrupting nerve signals.

Spinal Fusion Surgery

Surgery may be recommended when there is severe disc degeneration, instability, or nerve compression. While often effective, fusion changes spinal mechanics and involves significant recovery time.

Scheduling an Evaluation in Sebring

Persistent back pain deserves careful evaluation by a qualified orthopedic physician. In my experience treating spine conditions, the most effective care begins with a precise diagnosis and individualized treatment plan.

Patients in Sebring and surrounding areas of Florida who are interested in learning whether stem cell therapy for back pain may be appropriate can schedule a consultation for a full orthopedic assessment and discussion of available options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is stem cell therapy approved for back pain?

Certain biologic treatments such as bone marrow aspirate concentrate may be used in orthopedic practice. However, stem cell therapies for spinal disc regeneration are still an area of ongoing research and are not fully FDA-approved for every condition.

How long does recovery take after the procedure?

Most patients return to light activity within a few days. Full recovery and potential improvement may develop gradually over several weeks or months.

Does the injection cure degenerative disc disease?

No treatment currently cures disc degeneration. The goal of regenerative therapy is to support tissue healing and reduce inflammation, which may decrease pain for some patients.

Are results permanent?

Results vary widely. Some patients experience long-lasting improvement, while others may have partial or temporary relief.

Is the procedure painful?

Local anesthesia is typically used during the procedure. Mild soreness at the injection site can occur afterward.
