What Is Focal Shockwave Therapy?

Focal Shockwave Therapy — a targeted form of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) — uses powerful acoustic pressure waves to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes at the site of injury. These sound waves penetrate deep into the tendon where traditional therapies can’t reach, prompting key healing responses such as:

Unlike surface treatments like ultrasound, focal shockwaves deliver high-intensity energy directly to deeper injured tissues, making them especially effective for chronic or stubborn tendon problems.

How It Works

1. Targeted Acoustic Waves

A specialized device delivers focused shockwaves to the injured tendon.

2. Cellular Regeneration

The mechanical stimulus triggers biological processes that enhance tissue repair.

3. Pain Modulation

Shockwaves can interrupt pain signaling and help restore mobility.

4. Minimal Downtime

Sessions are quick — typically 10-15 minutes — and most patients resume normal activities right after.

I saw Dr Al-Rashid for a painful hip in 2023. I was at a point where I had to use my hands to “lift” my leg into the car because the pain was too intense to just lift it on its own. He said that I was a candidate for PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections because I still have cartilage. Although they are not (yet) covered by insurance, it was an investment in my comfort that I am very happy with. It has been over a year, I have no pain whatsoever and can carry out my normal routine, and increased my exercise. I highly recommend Dr Al-Rashid and the Atlantis Orthopedic Group in Palm Beach Gardens.

Always outstanding! He did my wife’s hip a little over a year ago and the follow up was great. I need two knee replacements and went to him to look at them. I will start with the first one end of this month. The staff follow through as been excellent. The best news is he does surgery at Palms West Hospital.

I had my right hip replaced by Dr. Rashid and he was excellent. The operation went smoothly. I didn't even feel the prosthetic when I woke up from surgery.

Before all of this he was very careful and helpful, explaining everything in detail from beginning to end, even tried a few treatments before jumping into an operation.

(injections/pills/scans etc)

He explained the pros and con very well. His staff is excellent in the Loxahatchee and Lake Worth office. I'm very happy I found him. My leg feels superior than my normal leg and it's only been three weeks. The incision was tiny, and after seeing him three weeks after the operation (today), the prosthetic is perfectly in place. I barely have any pain other than wound aches from the muscle incision, which of course is healing every single day.

I no longer feel any electrical surges on my leg, spasms, or the leg not waking up when I'm in a sitting position or sleeping. Literally feels perfect. I have nothing negative to say, would definitely recommend him to everybody. I like the fact that he was very detailed with everything from beginning to end.

He takes his job very seriously well being relatable and is not the type of doctor that jumps into an instant operation, unless absolutely needed, which is positive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is focal shockwave therapy safe?

Yes. Focal shockwave therapy is FDA-cleared, clinically studied, and considered safe when performed by trained medical professionals. It is non-invasive, does not require anesthesia, and carries minimal risk compared to surgery or steroid injections.

How many shockwave therapy sessions are needed?

Most patients need 3 to 6 sessions, typically spaced one week apart. The exact number depends on the tendon involved, how long the injury has been present, and individual healing response.

Does focal shockwave therapy hurt?

Most patients describe the sensation as mild to moderate discomfort during treatment, which lasts only a few minutes. The intensity can be adjusted to ensure comfort while still delivering effective therapeutic energy.

How long does each shockwave therapy session take?

A typical session lasts 10 to 15 minutes, making it easy to fit into a busy schedule. There is no downtime, and most patients return to daily activities immediately after treatment.

When will I feel results from shockwave therapy?

Some patients notice improvement within 1–2 weeks, while others experience gradual pain relief over several weeks as the tendon heals. Healing continues even after the final session as the body’s regenerative response progresses.

Is focal shockwave therapy better than surgery?

For many chronic tendon injuries, focal shockwave therapy can be an effective non-surgical alternative. It avoids surgical risks, long recovery times, and anesthesia. Surgery may still be considered for severe cases, but shockwave therapy is often tried first.

Is focal shockwave therapy covered by insurance?

Coverage varies by insurance provider and plan. Some plans may not cover shockwave therapy for certain conditions. Our office can review your options and discuss self-pay pricing during your consultation.

Do I need imaging before starting treatment?

In many cases, X-rays, ultrasound, or MRI may be reviewed to confirm the diagnosis and ensure precise targeting of the injured tendon. Imaging helps improve treatment accuracy and outcomes.
